Coimbatore: More than 50 people from various parts of the city on Wednesday lodged a complaint against the owner of a chain of jewellery shops, who allegedly cheated them of crores of rupees.
C S Manojkumar from Om Sakthi Nagar at Poosaripalayam said in his complaint that he had invested Rs 6 lakh in Mullai Groups, which has jewellery shops in Mettur, Gobichettipalayam, Erode and Coimbatore as the firm announced 20% to 30% returns.
“I got a receipt for the investment in July 2018. But the firm did not return any money and closed the shops. Its managing director Kurinchi and his partners are absconding,” he said.
As the economic offences wing (EOW) police has not taken any action against the firm, they decided to approach the city police, the investors said.
“Kurinchi has political connections. AIADMK ministers had inaugurated his shops. He has cheated more than 1,000 investors of crores of rupees. We hope that the city police will register a first information report (FIR) against Kurinchi and others and will arrest them soon,” said C Ramasamy of Kalappatti, who had invested Rs 2.46 lakh in the firm.
The city police have promised to launch an investigation.
