Mysuru: Allegations of misrepresenting his caste in the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission might land BJP Guru Vinayak, who represents Ward 18 (Yadavagiri), in trouble. President of the Karnataka Rajya Tribals Hitarakshana Sangha NH Subhash had complained to the (MCC) that Vinayak, who contested the election from Ward 18 (reserved for ), does not belong to the community (which is a ST community) but is a member of the Pariwar sect, which is classified as an Other Backward Caste (OBC). Following his complaint, the tahsildar of Mysuru taluk, and the Caste Verification Committee have rescinded Vinayak’s ST certificate.
Subhash said that the decision of the tahsildar and the caste panel had vindicated his stance. “I filed a complaint with the MCC commissioner, who in turn, referred the case to the Mysuru district SC/ST Caste Verification Committee. The civil rights’ enforcement cell, after a detailed verification, during the course of which it was learnt that Vinayak’s father Cheluvaraju, a retired cop, had had his caste certificate cancelled in 2008. At last, justice has prevailed. Those involved in Constitutional fraud should not be spared, including the then tahsildar and other staff members,” Subhash said.
The complainant has further urged the MCC Council to revoke Vinayak’s membership in the body. “The government must take stringent measures against officials who have issued the ST certificate to Vinayak. It looks like these certificates are being issued according to the whims and fancies of the officials,” Subash said.
Former general secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Committee (KPCC) SC/ST Wing BJ Gokul also spoke about the issue, and called for action to be initiated against the officials.
On the other hand, Vinayak remained defiant to the end. “I have all the necessary documents to prove I belong to the Nayaka community, which comes under the ST category. I have certificates to prove even my grandfather was a Nayaka,” Vinayak told TOI.
Mysuru taluk tahsildar Ramesh confirmed to TOI that the deputy commissioner had annulled the ST certificate issued to Yadavagiri corporator Guru Vinayak.
