SAMBALPUR: on Monday arrested one of their colleagues, assistant sub-inspector Banmali Kuanr, on charges of the gang of a 15-year-old girl. A 22-year-old youth Kaibalya alias Riku Nag of Melchhamunda area has also been arrested in connection with the incident.
Bargarh SP Mukesh K Bhamoo said, “I suspended Kuanr on Sunday night. He was arrested on Monday.” He added that the duo have been booked under Sections 363 (kidnap), 366 (kidnap to compel one to marry) and 376DA (gang rape of woman under 16) of the (IPC) besides Section 6 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
The SP said a deputy superintendent police and the Human Rights Protection Cell have also been entrusted with the task of conducting a departmental inquiry into the incident.
Police said, “The girl, who is a student of Class X, was allegedly kidnapped by Kaibalya alias Riku Nag when she had gone for tuition on February 8. Following the incident, the family members had lodged a complaint with Melchhamunda police station in this regard.”
Police said as per their preliminary investigation, one of the accused Riku, who was known to ASI Banmali Kuanr, had an affair with the girl. Riku had brought the girl to Sohela on February 8 and taken her to ASI Banmali Kuanr’s rented accommodation. He had allegedly raped her there and fled after locking the girl up in the house. When ASI Kuanr came to the house in the evening, he took the survivor to his government quarters on the premises of the Sohela police station, where he too allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, the police added.
On the morning of February 9, Kuanr took the girl back to his rented house and locked her up there. At around 12 noon, Kuanr returned to his house once again and left her near Sohela bus stand. Melchhamunda police found the victim in front of Sohela police station and handed her over to her family members.
Laxminarayan Panda, subdivisional police officer (Padampur), said, “The matter came to light after the girl was traced to Sohela and subsequently, a case was registered with Sohela police station. The accused ASI Banmali Kuanr and Riku Nag will be forwarded to the court today (Monday),” he said.
