TIRUPUR: A 62-year-old retired and his 57-year-old wife committed suicide by setting themselves on fire near Kangeyam in district of on Monday. Their eight-year-old grandson sustained burn injuries.
The deceased have been identified as S Thangamuthu and his wife, Valliyammal. Thangamuthu retired two years ago after working as an assistant to a village administrative officer at Sivanmalai.
The couple’s son, Chandrasekar, died six months ago due to a kidney failure. Chandrasekar’s wife, Priya, had deserted him and their son, Tharun, more than two years ago as his illness had restrained him from going for work. She started living with another man.
After Chandrasekar’s death, Thangamuthu and Valliyammal were depressed. Thangamuthu was suffering from diabetes too.
Around 6am on Monday, the couple woke Tharun up and made him stand outside their house before dousing themselves with kerosene and setting themselves on fire. On seeing, Tharun ran towards them and he sustained burn injuries.
Neighbours rushed the couple to Kangeyam Government Hospital where they were declared brought dead.
Tharun was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
The Kangeyam police registered a case and investigations were on.
